Her Requiem (4 women, 2 men)
In chilly northern Vermont, a mother and father's divergent reactions to their daughter Caitlin's grim and ambitious project change everything. This play was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theatre. It is currently in production at Lincoln Center's Claire Tow Theater (LCT3), directed by Kate Whoriskey.

Slowgirl (1 man, 1 woman)
A teenager flees to her reclusive uncle's retreat in the Costa Rican jungle to escape the aftermath of a horrific accident. This was the inaugural play of Lincoln Center's Claire Tow Theater (LCT3). It starred Željko Ivanek and Sarah Steele, and was directed by Anne Kauffman. It was then produced by Hyde Park Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre, and the Geffen Playhouse among others. The Landing (3 men, 1 woman)
Three original, thematically-linked musicals (Andra, The Brick, and The Landing). John Kander wrote the music, I wrote the book and lyrics. Premiered at the Vineyard Theatre, directed by Walter Bobbie, starring David Hyde Pierce, Julia Murney, Paul Anthony Stewart, and Frankie Seratch.

Kid Victory (4 women, 5 men)
This is an original musical I wrote with John Kander. Seventeen-year-old Luke Browst returns to his parents' home to a small town in Kansas after having vanished for almost a year. Profoundly changed, Luke will only confide in Emily, the owner of a local lawn/garden store, about his bewildering experiences. This premiered at Signature Theatre, VA in 2015. It will be produced by the Vineyard Theatre this fall, directed by Liesl Tommy.

Fellow Travelers
This is an opera adaptation of Thomas Mallon's novel about two men's attempt to find love during the "lavender scare" of the McCarthy era. I wrote the libretto, Gregory Spears wrote the music, Kevin Newbury is directing, and G. Sterling Zinsmeyer is producing. It will be produced by Cincinnati Opera this June.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
This is a multimedia stage adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel. I wrote the script with director Stephen Earnhart. There's more info at

The Quarry (2 men, 2 women, 1 pianist)
After a series of unsettling discoveries in a marble-quarry town in Vermont, antisocial widow Jean McClain decides to conduct her own investigation. This is a surreal detective story with a haunting, original score by Randal Pierce. The actors play many roles. This play was commissioned and produced by Vermont Stage Company in Burlington, VT.

Odyssey Room (2 women, 2 men)
Three estranged friends meet at their condemned middle school on the day before its demolition. Nothing is as they remembered it.
Development: Manhattan Theatre Club's 7@7 2013, directed by Daniel Aukin.

Kick Stop (2 men, 2 women)
An emotionally unstable father is forced to move back in with his ex-wife, derailing their son's plans.
Development: workshop at Second Stage Theatre, directed by Kate Whoriskey.

The Suburbanoids (2 men, 2 women)
This is a sci-fi musical about a suburban family who gets terroroized by an evil emperor named Zygorn. It was written for and performed by The Bad Astromauts (Hannah Cabell, Simone Perrin, and me) and David Hyde Pierce as the voice of Zygorn.
Premiered at The Red Room, NYC, 2004.

The Bad Astronauts
The lineup of this group changed over the years, but we did six full-length shows in various venues in downtown New York and Chicago, including The Red Room, The Present Company, The Duplex, The St. Mark's Theater, Collective Unconscious, The Chicago Sketch Fest, Galapagos, and others.
